Are You The Nismo Nissan GT-R?

Earlier this week Nissan made a big announcement about their storied Nismo motorsports division, specifically they'll be putting out a Nismo GT-R sometime in the next year. Is this it?

We just received a rather interesting spy shot of a disguised GT-R prototype. But as our tipster points out, there are some interesting cosmetic changes here, including LEDs that look like they have been moved up to accomodate space for a new front opening, possibly for cooling.

Maybe this is it. What would you like to see in a Nismo GT-R?

The Nismo Nissan GT-R Is Coming

Nissan's Nismo division is where they stick all the engineers obsessed with speed. You know the ones. They even have to urinate faster than the person in the next stall. At an event moments ago, Nissan officially opened a new Nismo plant and CEO Carlos Ghosn announced they'd finally be offering a Nismo version of the company's hi-tech joystick jockey Nissan GT-R you can drive without an FIA racing license or a Playstation.

You can buy a Nismo Juke. You can buy a Nismo 370Z, if you wish. You cannot buy a Nismo Nissan GT-R unless it's a GT3 spec racer (pictured) that costs north of $400,000.

That'll change later this year says Ghosn, who'd only go so far as to say you'll be able to drive one within the next 12 months. Other than that there were no photos or promises. Any guesses about how they'll make it worthy of the name?

Nissan profits fall on weak demand

Nissan InfinitiNissan makes model such as the Infiniti and Qashqai

Japanese car maker Nissan has reported a big fall in third quarter profits, blaming weak demand in Europe, China and the United States.

Net profit fell to 54.1bn yen ($583m; £371m) in the October to December period, down 35% from a year earlier.

Sales in the quarter dropped 5.3% to 2.2 trillion yen, with sales in its biggest market, China, down 31.3%.

Despite this, Nissan maintained its 340bn yen profit forecast for the full year.

Nissan's sales in China have been hurt by a territorial dispute between Japan and China which has hit sales of Japanese products.

Meanwhile the downturn in the European economy means all carmakers have suffered from poor sales there.

"Nissan's performance in the third quarter did not meet our expectations," said chief executive Carlos Ghosn.

"This was primarily the result of difficult operating conditions in Europe for the entire auto industry, in China for Japanese automakers, and in the US for Nissan."

However, there are hopes that the weakening of the yen against other currencies will help Japanese exporters.

The yen has lost about 20% of its value against the US dollar since October, helping Japanese firms to convert overseas profits back into yen at a more favourable rate.

Nissan GT-R II by Vivid Racing

The tuners at Vivid Racing have prepared an upgrade program for the Nissan GT-R that brings a power boost and some other mechanical changes. The first thing that they did is lower the suspension of the supercar by installing a KW Variant 3 coilover setup and then they installed a fresh new set of 3-piece 21-inch Niche alloy wheels with tinted brushed centers and a gloss black lip, wrapped around in Pirelli PZero performance rubbers.
The powerful V6 twin-turbo 545 hp (406 kW / 553 PS) engine of the Nissan GT-R has received an ECU tune courtesy of Cobb Accessport that increases the power by 60 hp for a total of 605 hp (451 kW  / 613 PS), while the titanium catback exhaust comes from Agency Power and features quad tips and a lightweight design, with the muffler section weighing just 15 lbs (7 kg).
Check out the mega gallery to see all the work put into by Vivid Racing for the Nissan GT-R.

2012 Nissan GTR P600 PKG by Switzer

The latest tuning program for the Nissan GT-R comes from Switzer Performance as this week they've unveiled the P600 PKG that increases the output of the engine from the standard 545 hp to 600 hp. To gain the extra power, the tuners had to install their own high-flow filters, a free-flowing SS90 exhaust and update the ECU software. That new exhaust system also makes the powerful twin-turbo V6 3.8-liter engine sound better. Thanks to these hardware modifications, the 2012 Nissan GT-R P600 PKG by Switzer Performance can do the 0-62 mph sprint in only 2.6 seconds. There aren't any styling changes to the GT-R but at least the car now rides on a fresh new set of Switzer Signature series lightweight forged aluminum wheels wrapped around in Michelin Pilot Supersport tires that according to the tuner improve the vehicle's handling capabilities and also provide a better ride quality. All these goodies are priced at $12,990.

Nissan Juke by Senner Tuning

If the $590,000 (€450,000) Nissan Juke-R is a little out of your price range, you might want to check out the latest package from Senner Tuning. Jointly developed with Autohaus Morchel, the package includes lowering springs (that reduce the ride height by 35mm), carbon fiber mirror caps and 20-inch alloy wheels with candy red accents. For added performance, the tuner installed a high-flow air filter and a sports exhaust system with four 90x75mm tailpipes. This enables the turbocharged 1.6-liter engine to produce 225 PS (165 kW / 222 hp) and 275 Nm (203 lb-ft) of torque - an increase of 35 PS (26 kW / 35 hp) and 35 Nm (26 lb-ft). The model will be priced from €32,730 which includes €7,490 worth of tuning and accessories.

Nissan Skyline V36 / Infiniti G37 by Wald International

Wald International has unleashed their Sports Line Black Bison Edition body styling once again. This time the firm from Osaka, Japan has paid homage to the Infiniti G37 sedan (aka Nissan Skyline V36 in Japan) with a comprehensive styling package which consists of a front bumper fascia with LED DRLs, flat black grille with matching Infiniti emblem, side skirts, luggage lid spoiler and rear bumper fascia with integrated brake light and cut outs for fitted quad exhaust pipes. In the photos we can see Wald is showing off their classic Mahora wheel in addition to two new sets from their Portofino P21C casted wheel line which is only available 20-inch size. As for the final touches, Wald also provides a lowered suspension and sport exhaust system.

The Nissan Juke is the modifier's car of the moment

IT WAS as tall as a wardrobe and some might argue about as pretty, but by gum it was quick. In the right hands, the Nissan Juke R could give most supercars a run for their money.

I'm not one of the journalists lucky enough to be given a go in the GTR-engined Ferrari basher but the first time I came across it I heard it before I saw it, an almighty, industrial roar, following seconds later by an unlikely black blur rocketing past on a private test track. Offering the sort of pace Porsche customers are more familiar with in a high-riding hatchback off-roader thing is, you've got to admit, an incredible engineering achievement.

But the Juke R's real success - and I know Nissan's marketing men are probably nodding smugly at this - is that the Juke seems to have become, out of nowhere, the modifier's car of the moment. On increasingly frequent occasions, pimped-out Jukes have become visitors at car shows. The quirkily-styled SUV from Sunderland is treading the same territory the Ford Capri, the Vauxhall Nova and the Citroen Saxo used to call their own.

This is unfortunate, because not only am I yet to drive a Juke (although I've got a little experience of the bigger, duller and even more ubiquitous Qashqai), but, two years on, I'm still struggling to form an opinion on it. One moment I hate its gawky face and faux Paris-Dakar wheelarches, but then the next I'm quietly admiring the direction the stylists took, because while you'll either love it or hate it, you'll have an opinion of some sort on it. Try saying that about the Volkswagen Touran.

But - and I think it's one of the few cars I can say this about - the Juke does seem to take the Pimp My Ride stuff in its stride. Those wheelarches, for instance, are so enormous they make the standard model look a bit underwheeled, but I've seen a couple with enormous alloys and whitewall tyres that look the business. It also, because it looks like a bit bonkers to begin with, seems to suit silly spoilers and tinted windows. I've no idea why, but it's increasingly becoming one of those cult cars that encourages all sorts of automotive creativity.

Which is a good thing. Let me know if you think yours is a bit of a blank canvas...

Police chase in Russa ends better than you may think

I have a hard time believing that all of the police in Russia are this nice, even the police in the U.S. wouldn't end a chase this way.  There are some rumored thoughts of what just might be going on here.  The first is that this guy is an undercover cop, I mean the the license plate T-KILLAH it really makes you wonder the legitimacy.  Second maybe this guy bribes the police, I mean it is Russia isn't it?  Finally, perhaps this guy is taking advantage of wonderful diplomatic immunity.  Whatever the case maybe, it must sure be nice to drive like this and get off so easy.

A Datsun revival could actually work with Nissan's eco know-how

GREAT news! Datsun - a brand you thought had died back in the days of Spandau Ballet and bad leggings - is back.

I am, unfortunately, a bit too young to remember a time when you stroll into a car showroom and drive out in a gleaming new Cherry or Bluebird, but as evocative automotive names go it's not exactly one I've brought up to recall fondly. Google the Datsun Sunny and it'll become immediately obvious why I'd go for a Golf instead.

True, I'll admit the original 240Z sports coupe is deservedly called a classic car, but it on its own can't save Datsun's reputation for being a maker of crushingly dull motors.

So you're probably expecting me to head into town, get my shoes polished and prepare to give plans to revive the name a right old kicking.

But I reckon the Nissan Renault partnership, a sort of Franco-Japanese alliance aiming for automotive world domination, is on the ball and could actually pull off reviving a rubbish brand best known for building boring hatchbacks to boringly high standards.

Take, for instance, Nissan itself, which realised a couple of years ago nobody was buying saloons anymore. It pulled both the Primera and the QX out of the showrooms and instead brought you the Qashqai, a sort of off-roader meets hatchback thingymebob whose name nobody can spell or pronounce properly. A car which you, the great British public, responded to buying them in their thousands. The Nissan Qashqai is absolutely everywhere because you love it.

Nissan then decided, using all the money they'd made from Qashqai sales, to fit wheels to an SR-71 spyplane and go racing at Le Mans. While the car they've created, the Deltawing, looks like something Darth Vader would drive it shows they've got the finger on the pulse, because they're using it to prove small, lightweight cars are better than big, heavy ones. It might only have a 1.6 litre engine but - because it's only got half the drag of a normal racer - that's all it needs.

Admittedly, we're not all Stars Wars villains so you probably won't see the Deltawing for sale any time soon, but what Nissan might be offering you instead by reviving Datsun is the sort of reliability and ruggedness Qashqai buyers love, but with added eco-friendliness and a lower price.

A Deltawing-inspired Datsun with racing-inspired aerodynamics, eco-friendly yet unexpectedly exciting engines, low weight and - crucially - an even lower price? That's a Sunny successor even I'd go for...

If Darth Vader drove a car...

THE same people who brought you the Micra and the Almera have just fitted wheels to an SR-71 spyplane.

This, believe it or not, is not the next Batmobile, but a racing car which Nissan is going to campaign at this year's Le Mans 24 Hours. The DeltaWing, the company reckons, will weigh half as much as a normal racer and have half the drag. And, presumably, twice the wow factor.

Andy Palmer, executive vice president of Nissan, said:

“As motor racing rulebooks have become tighter over time, racing cars look more and more similar and the technology used has had less and less relevance to road car development. Nissan DeltaWing aims to change that and we were an obvious choice to become part of the project.

“But this is just the start of our involvement. Nissan DeltaWing embodies a vast number of highly-innovative ideas that we can learn from. At the same time, our engineering resources and commitment to fuel efficiency leadership via our PureDrive strategy will help develop DeltaWing into a testbed of innovation for Nissan.”

Admittedly, it's not a classified entrant - so technically, it can't win the race anyway - and it's only got a 1.6 litre engine, but because they've bolted an enormous turbocharger it still manages to pump out an impressive 300bhp. Not that any of that matters, because while it's purportedly acting as a technological testbed the thing absolutely everyone will be talking about is that body.

As a sort of cross between an SR-71 spyplane, a Le Mans racer and something out of the Star Wars films I think it looks fabulous.

You probably disagree. Let me know...
